From Within
Holistic skincare pertains to a philosphy surrounding
the complete care of not just our skin, but ourselves in general.
The skin is not an isolated part of our bodies, and is widely
connected - physically, intellectually, sensually and spiritually.
It is the largest organ of the body and is linked to all our
major functions, including the immune, respiratory, circulatory,
lymphatic, and neurotransmitter systems.
Aging that occurs in the body and the skin is
biological, not chronological and what happens on the inside,
on both a physical and emotional front, truly does show up on
the outside. No matter what line a beauty company tries to sell
you, the basic fact is that a beautiful face is not just skin
deep. Look at plants for example; the first indication they
need water is droopy leaves. They may revive slightly if you
spray water on their surface, but in order to restore the plants
to vibrancy you have to water its roots.
Paying loving attention to the health of your
skin by adopting a holistic approach that includes optimal diet
and lifestyle, and by using pure, natural skin care products,
you can delay or even reverse the signs of aging.
The following tips will encourage youthful glowing skin and
a radiant complexion.
Diet
Drink at least 8–10 glasses of pure water a day. Drinking
water keeps the skin hydrated and supple. It clears the body
of waste products and toxins, clears the eyes and the complexion,
prevents and softens wrinkles, and provides us with energy and
vitality.
Follow our nutritional and dietary guidelines. Eat whole foods
with relatively low glycemic index values. Increase food rich
in anti oxidants, essential fatty acids, vitamins, minerals
and enzymes, such as colourful vegetables, berries, fruits vegetables,
fish, and green tea etc. Consider supplements if necessary.
Ensure that digestive function is optimal through good diet,
and consider taking a probiotic supplement daily to boost beneficial
flora in the digestive tract.
Avoid or limit alcohol, sugar, caffeine, artificial sweeteners,
food additives, trans fats and simple carbohydrates and dairy.
These are highly inflammatory to many people and are linked
to skin problems and premature aging of the skin.
Try to cleanse and rest your system a few times a year by practicing
a regular detox. Otherwise, try eating only organic, washed
fruits and vegetables for a few days and drink lots of filtered
water (this is easiest in the spring and summer).
Lifestyle
If you are smoking, try to quit. Smoking can add ten years to
your skin’s appearance.
Exercise daily to reduce stress, support your body's natural
detoxification, and reduce inflammation. Exercise brings more
oxygen to your skin resulting in firmer and nourished skin.
Examine your hidden emotions or emotional tendencies. If you
think you may be harbouring some unexpressed emotions, find
a safe place to free them. Negativity has a way of manifesting
in the skin. There are many wonderful methods of releasing pent-up
feelings of anger, anxiety, and fear. Meditation, deep breathing
and mindfulness exercises are also healthy stress-relieving
practices. If you need inspiration, look at the skin of most
yoga teachers!
Skin care regime
Use pure natural skin care products, and read
up on toxic additives. Throw out products that contain unnecessary
ingredients… and also throw out any unnecessary products!
Cleanse your skin morning and night with a gentle, natural cleanser.
Rinse thoroughly with clean, tepid water and gently pat dry.
Moisturise and protect you skin with a pure plant moisturiser.
When using sunscreen find a product that contains antioxidants.
Avoid heavy night creams. Theses can prevent your skin from
breathing overnight, and interfere with the skins natural eliminative
function. They also weigh the skin down, and can encourage wrinkles.
Opt for light serums, oils, and elixirs instead.
Use a gentle all natural exfoliant 2–3 times a week to
refine the complexion, remove excess dead skin cells and debris.
Do not use harsh abrasive scrubs as these may damage the skin.
Once a week use a facial mask to cleanse and purify and to tone,
nourish and hydrate your skin.
Smile – this makes every one look good!
